In media sound is a very important element. There is diegetic sound which is sound that the actors can hear for example speech, music playing in a bar, cars beeping, a phone ringing or a door bell. This sound is important to add in otherwise the media product wouldn't make sense.
Non-diegetic sound is sound that only the audience can hear but not the actors. This includes background music, sound effects and possibly an actors thoughts which is a voice over. This is also a very important aspect to the media product as it creates an effect for the audience and helps them to understand what is happening and how the characters are feeling at a specific moment in time.
Contrapuntal sound is when the sound doesn't match what is happening in the scene. This would represent the the audience that what is happening isn't normal for example in the film 'When a Stranger Calls' at the beginning a girl is murdered but the sound that is used is happy music along with laugher from people at the fair ground. This created an effect for the audience that made it sort of creepy that everyone else was having fun but just around the corner she was getting murdered in her house.
Parallel sound is the opposite to contrapuntal sound where the music and sound effects match what is happening. This creates an effect to make the audience feel just as scared as the victims. For example in most horrors scary, tense music is played when someone is about to be killed.
