HOW DOES YOUR OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
We used 'Dead Silence' and 'Se7en' for our inspiration to create our OTS. We tried to make some of the shots look similar to these famous horrors as well as adding in some of our own ideas to put a spin on it and make it different.
Our OTS uses conventions from the real media products 'Dead Silence'. They're both non linear and involve the killer. We developed it as in the real media product the man is planning his possible killings where as in our OTS we had the killer actually performing his tortures and murders. Both product use the effect to distort the image or make it look old and crackly as this creates the idea that not everything happening is definite and leaves the audience to use their own imagination to assume what is happening currently or what is happening next. Furthermore, both products use red text as the colour red has negative connotations such as blood enhancing the theme of the video; horror. It also uses ideas from the real media product as both videos have parts where it focuses on the killers hands which makes the audience wonder who he is and what he looks like. This creates an effect of uncertainty as well as not ruining the rest of the film by adding spoilers as most films don't reveal the killer until near the end. We challenged the real media product by adding in biblical pictures to further the idea that the killer is not only dangerous, but a psychopath.
Another famous horror movie we took inspiration from another successful horror movie; Se7en. Both of the videos focus on the hands of the killer which creates an effect as the audience don't know what he looks like just like in Dead Silence. In Dead Silence the focus is more on the panning of the murders where as in Se7en the focus is more on the actually torture side to the movie and zooms in on the gruesome aspects. This inspired us to create an OTS which focused on both the planning and the gruesome aspects of the torture. We challenged the real media products as neither of them involved anyone other than the killer where as we decided to use victims to create more of an effect for the audience as they would have people to sympathise for. The idea behind this was to enhance the fear for the killer as the audience would witness his tortures rather than just witness the planning of them. When we put the two videos together it worked well as there are parts where they look very similar for example the dirty hands.
